Responsibilities

 

The Draper Laboratory Embedded Systems Engineering Division is seeking a systems engineer to lead multidisciplinary teams to develop and deliver highly reliable and safety critical systems. These programs provide technology-intensive systems for Draper’s Customers that require hardware and software systems to have high reliability in safety critical situations.

 

A successful candidate will be expected to perform systems engineering and engineering task management functions as well as support business development activities and proposal preparation. The individual will be expected to participate in a full scope of system development activities, from identification of customer and stakeholder needs, definition of concept solutions and analysis of alternatives, development planning and execution, test, and delivery.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Applicants must have the following key qualifications:

  • Experience with hardware, software, control algorithms, built-in test for real-time control systems
  • Ability to interact with electrical and software engineers to develop systems which are highly reliable and provide fault tolerant, fail-safe and self-diagnostic characteristics
  • Ability to develop simplified but accurate abstract descriptions of complex systems and use these communicate to customers, reliability/safety review boards and to design engineers
  • Knowledge of reliability analysis using techniques such as reliability block diagrams, fault trees, and Markov modelling
  • Experience with Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
  • Knowledge of system safety practices for control systems such as Mil-Std-882 and ISO 26262
  • Experience with environmental testing per Mil-Std-810 or RTCA DO-160 desirable
  • Experience with Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) per Mil-Std-461/462 or RTCA DO-160 desirable
  • Experience with safety-critical software development per RTCA DO-178 and ARINC-653 desirable
  • Experience with developing system and software requirements for real-time control systems desirable
  • Familiarity with typical electronic circuitry (digital, analog, power) used in real-time control systems
  • Familiarity with serial data buses such as Mil-Std-1553, RS-422, CAN, Ethernet and time-triggered is desirable
  • Familiarity with single event effects (SEE) due to space radiation desirable
  • Familiarity with real-time software architectures, coding, operating systems, verification
  • Familiarity with system simulation and modeling using Matlab, Simulink, SysML
  • Familiarity with Hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) and simulated fault injection testing desirable
