The Information & Cognition Division is seeking a Group Leader for the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Group. The HCI group is an interdisciplinary team of human-centered engineers who focus on creating usable and useful solutions that enhance our users’ mission performance. The group applies a mix of approaches and techniques from User Experience Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Human-Robot Interaction, and Experimental Psychology to build solutions for soldiers, analysts, clinicians, energy workers, first responders, and other user groups with critical missions. The HCI group works to stay on the leading edge of user interaction and information display techniques and technology, in order to quickly bring the most impactful solutions to our users.   


The Group Leader position is a multifaceted role, in which the candidate will be responsible for managing and developing staff, enabling development of novel HCI capabilities, and performing as an individual contributor or leader on project teams. The Group Leader will be expected to manage, grow, and maintain a talented staff of engineers, building a strategic mix of skillsets and disciplines. The Group Leader will also be responsible for promoting the culture of innovation within the group, growing the culture of collaboration outside of the group, nurturing new ideas, and supporting engineers in proposal writing and other business development activities. Lastly, the Group Leader will also be an engineer and will execute on programs in appropriate roles. Specific technology areas of interest include adaptive interfaces, understandable machine intelligence, human-machine teaming, and real-time decision support.




  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, User Experience Design, or other human-centered engineering field with 5+ years hands-on experience working in the field
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in their field, including user research methods, data synthesis, design, prototyping, and user evaluation
  • Experience building and leading interdisciplinary teams to demonstrable successes
  • Flexible multi-tasker who can adapt to evolving priorities
  • Strategic thinker who can craft and execute a vision for the group that moves the larger organizational goals forward
  • Collaborative team player with a passion for people and innovation
  • Ability to clearly communicate about technology, user-centered techniques, and the value of human-centered engineering to a broad range of audiences, including customers, internal and external stakeholders, management, engineering peers, and others across a broad range of technical and non-technical backgrounds
  • Excellent written & oral communication skills
