    As an engineer in the Mechanical Engineering Division, you will be exposed to a broad range of technical challenges where you can apply your knowledge as well as learn new skills while being involved with solving problems of national interest.  As the focal point at Draper for hardware development and fabrication, the staff within the Mechanical Engineering & System Packaging Division is responsible for supporting technical solutions across the Lab.  Members of the division propose, design, analyze and build a variety of electro-mechanical hardware, ranging from precision instruments to components for large, high-reliability systems. 


    We are looking for a candidate to specifically support the Trident guidance system program – Draper’s largest program.  As the system continues through production and deployment, a packaging engineer is needed to grow the team as they resolve issues related to production, deployment, and sustainment.  This position is also intended to prepare the candidate for a role supporting future developments of next generation guidance systems.


    The technical responsibilities will vary depending on project needs, however example topics include:

    • Working with production team(s) to resolve functional issues found in circuit card assemblies
    • Interfacing with the design/quality community and production partners to understand and reconcile production issues
    • Reviewing designs and creating engineering change orders to correct issues
    • Generating creative technical solutions to reconcile issues while meeting the high-reliability requirement of the system
    • Managing assigned problem reports and supporting material review boards as a technical team member
    • Maintaining, updating, and adhering to processes and procedures required for a high-reliability system
    • Position may require periodic travel


    Additionally, the candidate will participate on cross-functional teams with engineers from other disciplines, requiring clear communication of ideas and status updates to internal teams.  Opportunities may also develop where the candidate will meet with (and present to) external customers.

    Tasks depend on program priorities, however desired skills include manufacturing in production environments (particularly high-reliability circuit card assemblies) and mitigation of non-conformances including identification of trends, development and administration of technical investigations, and definition of corrective action programs.


    Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant field such as mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, or related.  Minimum of 7 years relevant work experience is required with demonstrated technical leadership, specific experience required in design and manufacturing circuit card assemblies for high reliability applications. Experience is also required in leading teams, driving technical solutions, and clearly communicating information and decision processes to technical and management audiences.  Depending on the specific project assignment, the following skills are applied, though applicants are not required to have every skill listed:

    • Experience with 3D CAD packages, specifically Creo
    • Experience with printed circuit board design and assembly
    • Familiarity with machine shop tools and processes
    • Familiarity with analysis tools such as ANSYS, Comsol, and/or Matlab
    • Microsoft products
