    The Strategic Weapon Systems group at Draper is seeking a System Architect with broad technical skills to work within multidisciplinary teams to conceptualize, develop, analyze, and/or assess robust Guidance, Navigation and Control (GN&C) system solutions for strategic defense systems.


    A successful candidate will be:

    • Highly motivated to support the delivery of technology solutions that are of strategic importance to the nation
    • Dedicated to developing the in-depth mission and technology domain expertise that enable realization of such solutions for complex systems
    • Capable of leading large, multidisciplinary teams by setting the vision for the future, and organizing, aligning and motivating team members to achieve defined goals
    • A skilled collaborator, working with customers to understand needs, constraints and expectations and communicating engineering solutions and status


    Tasking may include: identification of customer needs, development of use cases, requirements analysis and flow-down, system concept/architecture development (including analysis of alternatives), system design, interface definition/control, verification/test planning, development of systems engineering documentation, model development, vehicle and mission-level simulation development, performance assessment, documentation of analysis results, and presentation of results to both internal and external stake-holders.


    The individual should be a highly motivated self-starter with willingness to learn and participate in a dynamic team environment while supervising junior and senior engineers. The opportunity to work as part of team developing a state-of-the-art GN&C system will provide exposure to a wide range of advanced technologies, including inertial sensors, precision electronics, and advanced algorithms.



    Applicants must have the following key qualifications:

    • An M.S. degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline (systems engineering, aeronautical engineering, mechanical engineering, etc.)
    • 20+ years of relevant professional experience;
    • Demonstrated experience in technical and/or organizational leadership, including building and executing large scale DOD (or other national level R&D) programs;
    • Candidates should have demonstrated experience and sound knowledge in core technologies (GN&C, aerodynamics, sensors, systems, electronics, embedded software) as well as practical systems engineering skills required to integrate these core technical disciplines;
    • Extensive experience in system modeling and dynamic simulation development;
    • Strong presentation skills and the ability to articulate complex technical ideas to a broad audience;
    • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other leading national experts in science and technology from academia, national laboratories, and industry;
    • Ability to set an organizational vision and achieve results;    
    • Willingness to travel as necessary.


    Any of the following additional qualifications are highly desirable:

    • Prior experience in the domain of strategic weapon systems is strongly preferred;
    • Foundational knowledge and/or practical experience with radiation physics and effects, as pertaining to the design of avionics systems;
    • Experience with guidance system development for military applications;
    • Experience in the design of integrated hardware/software avionics systems;
    • Experience using Matlab, Simulink, SysML or equivalent;
    • Experience with DOORS and/or requirements traceability.
